Volkswagen’s Europe EV sales more than double in first quarter
The Volkswagen Group more than doubled its battery-electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries in Europe during the first quarter of 2025, signaling a strong resurgence in electric vehicle demand across the region. According to a company statement released on Wednesday, the automaker delivered over 150,000 BEVs in Europe between January and March, a significant increase from 74,400 units during the same period in 2024.
This surge in electric vehicle deliveries highlights Volkswagen’s growing momentum in the EV market, driven by an expanding lineup of electric models and increasingly stringent EU emissions regulations that are pushing both manufacturers and consumers toward electrification.
In addition to the strong EV performance, Volkswagen reported a 29% increase in overall vehicle orders—including both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) models—in Western Europe compared to the first quarter of last year. The figures confirm earlier reporting by the German newspaper Bild and reflect a wider recovery in consumer demand for new vehicles across the region.
The broader context underscores a significant trend in the European automotive sector: while total car sales have declined, sales of battery-electric vehicles have grown substantially. Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) suggests that new emissions targets and the introduction of compelling new EV models are finally accelerating adoption after years of relatively sluggish growth.
Volkswagen is expected to release its full first-quarter unit sales report later on Wednesday, which will provide further insight into the performance of its various brands—including VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT, and Porsche—and how they are contributing to the company’s electrification strategy.
This development positions Volkswagen as a key player in Europe's fast-evolving EV landscape, where competition from Tesla, Stellantis, Renault, and Chinese newcomers like BYD continues to intensify.
